Net Neutrality Flash Talk

Net Neutrality Flash Talk
Net Neutrality is an important part of our experience on the internet. Net Neutrality is a protocol for the internet that limits the power of big corporations and ISPs, and keeps the internet free and open for all who use it. Thanks to Net Neutrality, ISPs are unable to intentionally block, slow down, or charge money for specific websites and online content. The term “Net Neutrality” was coined in 2003 by professor Tim Wu. He saw, along with others, that as the internet continued to expand, it was getting so big that there needed to be a set of rules that would help govern it, prevent big corporations from taking over the internet and charging lots of money for its use. This is what the original creators of the internet intended, to have a free and open system, and Net Neutrality is what helps keep the internet that way.
However, despite all these innovations, there are still ever-present threats to Net Neutrality. Ajit Pai, chairman of the FCC, wants to destroy Net Neutrality. In 2015, under similar circumstances, the FCC tried to remove/limit some of the rules of Net Neutrality, but millions of people petitioned them not to. Now, the FCC is attempting to remove the rules of Net Neutrality again. Without Net Neutrality, the internet would be a very different place. It could become a closed down network, with only the largest ISPs deciding who could succeed and who couldn’t. Freedom to use the internet would be severely restricted.

There are only a few drawbacks to Net Neutrality, including that it could lead to higher taxes, and that it has the potential to harbour hate speech since it protects free speech. Overall, I believe that there are many positives, with only a few negatives to Net Neutrality. I believe that Net Neutrality is a good concept to have, since the original founders of the internet intended for it to be an open system for everyone to use. Without Net Neutrality, the internet could be abused by big corporations and ISPs, that want to limit who can use the internet and make it over bloated with ads, as well as making it very expensive to use. The internet was created for everyone, which is why Net Neutrality should be used to keep it that way.
